My nan asked me this morning whether brides are allowed to give speeches now. Nan, I checked. We are. Thank you all for coming, for travelling so far, and for the presents, which Rob has already started opening in his head. Dad, thank you for your speech, and for only crying twice, which is fewer than we had in the sweepstake. Mum, thank you for every fitting, every list and every phone call that started with "Just one more thing." Pat and Steve, thank you for making me feel like one of yours from the very first Sunday lunch. Rob and I met at a pub quiz. His team was called Quiz Team

I made a spreadsheet for this wedding. It has fourteen tabs. Jordan was in charge of one cell: "Pick a cake." It took him three weeks, and he tasted every sample twice, to be sure. Thank you all for being here. Mom and Dad, thank you for everything, including letting me take over your dining room for a year. Carol and Mike, thank you for raising a man who reads the instructions, and for the sweater you knitted me our first Christmas, in exactly my favorite color. You'd asked Jordan. He got it right. Last spring, when my grandma was sick, Jordan drove me to see her every Sunday, three hours

The first time I saw Sam, she was carrying a ladder down Fifth Street, by herself, at seven in the morning. I asked if she needed a hand. She said no. I took the other end anyway. Thank you all for coming, especially those of you who flew in from Ohio and brought the weather with you. Mom, thank you for teaching me that I can do almost anything, and for letting me find out the hard way. Denise and Paul, thank you for Sam, and for the lake house weekends that made me part of your family long before today. Sam and I have carried a lot of things since that ladder: two couches up four flights of

This morning my dad practised walking me down the aisle one last time, in the kitchen, with a mop standing in for me. He's been rehearsing since June. The mop has been very patient. Dad, you didn't need the practice. You've walked beside me my whole life: to school, to my driving test, to the station the day I moved to London, where you told me you had something in your eye. You had something in your eye today, too. Mum, thank you for everything, and for the timings, which were perfect. Ian and Maggie, thank you for welcoming me so warmly, and thank you all for coming such a long way. Tom, I

I wasn't going to give a speech. Then I realised this is the only day I get to say "my husband" for the first time in front of everyone I love. So: my husband. Yes, that sounds right. Thank you all for being here. Mum and Dad, thank you for everything. Linda and Gary, thank you for Ben. Ben, thank you for asking, and for asking again after I laughed the first time. To my husband.

Our dog Pickles doesn't like anyone. He spent Nick's first three visits under the bed. On the fourth visit, Nick sat on the kitchen floor and read his book out loud for two hours. It was a book about tax law. Around chapter six, Pickles came out, lay down on Nick's feet and fell asleep. I think he just wanted the reading to stop. But that was the night I knew. Thank you all for coming. Mom and Dad, thank you for everything, including dog-sitting tonight. Diane and Rich, thank you for raising a man who'll sit on a kitchen floor for two hours for a dog who hates him. Nick, you're patient with

  1. Opening0:20

Today is the fourth Saturday in August 2014, and I would like to take you back to exactly to the day 10 years ago tonight, the fourth Saturday in August 2004.

Why it works: She opens on a date, not a thank-you: exactly ten years ago tonight. The room knows a story is coming before she's said anything else.

  2. Our story1:48

It was Joe Nightclub. The it spot at the corner of John and Richmond in the heart of Toronto's clubbing district. After one of our group's typical Saturday night pre-drinks at Roger and Frith's house, I found myself on the club's first floor dance floor. I remember distinctly Greg, Jack and Rich were dancing to my left. Casey was doing her notorious two-step bar move to my right. But I was really distracted. The elusive friend of this group, this Con, kept catching my eye. I vividly remember him standing there. He was clothed in his favorite bar look at the time, which was bowling shoes from Aldo. Ripped and just slightly flared, light-colored jeans. And an open dress shirt that was too big, unbuttoned, too far, and untucked. Oh, and a few Livestrong bracelets on. I noticed at the pre-drink that he was a little bit more chatty than usual, and here he was again, slowly creeping closer on the dance floor. Before I knew it, we were dancing, and the rest of the group had gone upstairs. Soon, my young 19-year-old self, was pinned up against the walls of Joe Nightclub. And so follows the story of our first kiss. If Con has ever tried, or ever tries to tell you this story differently, I promise you he is lying. Con and I have not been together since that night at Joe Nightclub.

Why it works: The details do the work: the club, the friends on the dance floor, and his outfit, down to the bowling shoes from Aldo and the Livestrong bracelets. She tells it as a scene, so everyone can picture it.

The result: the table laughs at the bowling shoes, and again at the Livestrong bracelets at .

  3. The MSN chats1:58

While I spent a decent amount of time obsessing over him after that first night, for some reason, it took him a little while. However, this dynamic was never that obvious to me until I recently pulled up some old MSN history. November 1st, 2005. 8.50pm. Katie: Hey, your Halloween costume was hilarious last night. 8.57pm. Katie: It looked like so much fun. 9.15pm. Okay, have a great night. TTYL. I was bold and I initiated our next chat. November 12th, 2005. 12.45pm. Hey, Con. Katie: I saw the pics from last night. There were no pictures. I didn't see anything. CCM decides to respond. Three hours later, I remember running to my computer when I heard the little like, uh-oh, or whatever it was. His response, ha, BRB. Once we got past the hurdle of Con playing it just a little bit too cool, we have somehow always found our way back to each other. It has never mattered where our different paths have taken us. It has seemed like it has never been an option for us not to be together.

Why it works: She reads their old MSN messages out loud, timestamps and all. It's funny because it's real, and it makes her point without her saying it: she was keen, and he played it cool.

The result: the biggest laugh of the speech, nine seconds of it, at “ha, BRB.”

  4. To my husband0:29

There is nobody who can make me laugh for a whole night straight, who knows me at my core better, who makes me feel the most comforted in their presence, who enables me to find pleasure in everyday things simply because we are together. And so, to my gorgeous husband, there's no one on this earth I would have rather been waiting for me at that end of that aisle today. Whatever life has in store for us, I will always be beside you and on your side.

Why it works: After the laughs she talks straight to Con: nobody makes her laugh like he does, and there's no one she'd rather have had waiting at the end of the aisle. There are no thank-yous and no toast in this one; the whole speech is for him.

How to start, and how to finish

The two hardest sentences to write are the first and the last. Take one of these, or let it show you the shape.

Openers

None of them “for those who don’t know me”.

  • “I've spent a year planning this wedding, and I left the speech until last night.”

  • “Daniel said he'd do the talking tonight. That was his first mistake as a husband.”

  • “I'm going to say ‘my husband’ a lot tonight. Please bear with me. I've been practicing.”

Closers

How to land the toast.

  • “I planned everything except this, and it turned out to be the easy part. To my husband.”

  • “Daniel, you can have the microphone now. But first, please raise your glasses to my husband.”

  • “My husband. I don't think I'll get tired of saying it. Please raise your glasses to Daniel.”

Questions

Good questions, quick answers

Does the bride give a speech?

More and more often. At a British wedding it isn't a tradition, since the speeches used to belong to the father of the bride, the groom and the best man, but plenty of brides speak now. In the US there's no rule either. Some couples give one speech together instead.

What should a bride say in her speech?

Five parts: an opening line, the thank-yous, the story of the two of you, a few words to your husband or wife, and the toast. Thank the guests, both sets of parents, your bridesmaids and anyone who helped with the day. Then talk to your partner directly, not about them.

When does the bride give her speech?

There's no fixed slot. Many brides speak after the father of the bride, or straight after the groom so the couple's speeches sit together. Some go first, to welcome everyone. Agree it with your partner and your planner.

How long should a bride's speech be?

Three to five minutes, which is around 400 to 550 words out loud. If your partner is speaking too, split the thank-yous between you, so the room doesn't hear the same list twice.

Who does the bride toast?

Usually her new husband or wife. Some brides toast the guests instead, or the bridesmaids if the groom isn't doing it. Pick one and say it clearly, so everyone knows when to lift their glass.

How do I start a bride's speech?

Start with something that happened, or with the fact that you're speaking at all, since some of the room won't expect it. Saying "my husband" or "my wife" out loud for the first time gets a reaction too. Put the thank-yous second.

Speaking in a different seat?

You have the shape of it now

The five parts are the same every time. The story in the middle is the part only you have, so that is the part we ask you for.
