The first word Claire ever read out loud was STOP. She was four, in the back seat of our old Buick, and she shouted it so loud that I stopped. In the middle of the intersection. Her mother has never let me forget it. I'm Paul, Claire's dad. Diane and I want to thank every one of you for being here, and Noah's family most of all, for driving up from Tucson and making us feel like we've known you for years. After that, every car ride was a reading lesson. YIELD. MERGE. SLOW CHILDREN, which she thought was very rude. By the time she was ten, she was reading the paper map on our road trips, and I

When James came to ask for my blessing, I was ready. I had twelve questions. On cue cards. My wife told me not to use them. I used them. Question one: "What are your intentions?" He said, "To marry your daughter, if that's all right with you." Fair enough. Question four: "Can you change a tyre?" He said yes, and then he asked if I'd like him to show me, because Poppy had told him about the time I rang the AA for a flat on our own driveway. I'm Graham, Poppy's dad, and I'd like it on record that the tyre was very flat. By question nine I'd run out of tough ones, so I asked him what he'd do if

Carol and I did the math last night. You came here from eleven states and two countries, and one of you drove fourteen hours with a toddler. Thank you. We know what that took. I'm Frank, Rosie's dad, and my job tonight is to welcome you, so welcome. Will's family, especially: you've been part of ours for a while now, and tonight it's official. When Rosie was seven, she organized the whole neighborhood into a lemonade stand. Not one stand. Four. She had a map, a schedule, and a kid named Brian on cups. By noon she'd made forty dollars, and she gave every cent to the family down the street

For twenty-six years, Ellen kept a list on our fridge of things Abby said that made her laugh. It started when Abby was three and told the pediatrician she was "mostly fine, but tired of everybody." By the end it ran to four pages, held up with a magnet shaped like a lobster. I'm Steve, Abby's dad. I brought the list tonight, because Ellen would want to be part of this, and this is the best way I know to bring her. I won't read all of it. Just the last one Ellen wrote down, three years ago, from her hospital bed. Abby had been reading to her all afternoon, and when the nurse asked Abby if she

The first time I came over for dinner, Maya was eight, and she told me I wasn't allowed to sit in the big chair. That was her dad's chair. I could sit on the step stool. I sat on the step stool. For about a year. I'm Ray, Maya's stepdad. Her dad, Mark, is here tonight too, and between the two of us she's had twice the embarrassing car rides and twice the lectures about curfew. She'll tell you it was too many of both. The chair rule held until she was nine and broke her arm on a trampoline. I drove her to the ER, and on the way home, still in the cast, she said, "You can have the big chair on

Good evening, everyone. I'm Rick, Hailey's dad, and I promised Hailey I'd keep this to one minute, so her mom is timing me. Hailey, when you were little you'd fall asleep in the car, and I'd drive around the block a few extra times so I didn't have to wake you. I've been doing some version of that ever since, trying to make the good parts last a little longer. Tonight included. Evan, last winter you drove three hours in the snow to bring her soup from the diner she grew up on, because she'd mentioned once that she missed it. To Hailey and Evan. How'd I do on time?

  1. Opening0:09

Jess's told me to keep this speech under 30 minutes, so I'm going to try my hardest.

Why it works: He starts with a joke about how long he'll talk. The room knows it won't be a long speech, and he gets his first laugh.

The result: a laugh, and the speech has barely started.

  2. Meeting Kobe1:11

I remember when Jess first came to me and said, what do you think about me going on a date with Kobe, who is a bit older? She said, everyone I've spoken to has disapproved of it. And I looked at her and I said, I think it's good. Because I know my daughter. She's a great judge of character. And then the next day Kobe came and picked up Jess. He came in and met me. Now I had my speech ready, the typical dad speech, which involved machetes, axes, digging holes in the backyard and things like this. And I looked at him, I shook his hand, and I just knew straight away, he's the right person. I just knew. I never said, I didn't have a concern in the world. They arrived home at 9pm exactly on time. Do you remember? Yes.

Why it works: He tells how he met the groom. Jess asked about dating an older man, and he said yes because he trusts her judgment. The dad speech he had ready, with machetes and holes in the backyard, turned into a handshake.

The result: he asks the couple “Do you remember?” and gets a “Yes” back.

  3. The banana story1:27

The second time I met Kobe, however, was questionable. Went to a restaurant. Went to a restaurant. On the way there, a female friend of mine said, install Snapchat so we can communicate, right? And I didn't even know what this app was. Kobe explained to me what it is. This is, you know, what you do, send photos and all this sort of stuff. And we sat down at the restaurant. It was Kobe, Jess, Jeremy and I. And we'd just finished the main course. And my friend sent me a picture of her dinner, right? And I said, you know, what am I meant to do with this? And Kobe leaned over and goes, you know, now snap your banana and send it back to her. You know, this is how you get the ball rolling. This is how things happen. And I said, wait up, wait up. Mate, like, where I come from, we do not do this sort of thing. Right? And I was in shock. And what I forgot is I ordered fried banana for dessert. And he was simply talking about my dessert on the table, right? He's in the defensive mode right now. Yeah. So he was just trying to help me. So it was fine.

Why it works: The joke is on him. He takes Kobe's Snapchat tip the wrong way, and he saves the twist, fried banana for dessert, for the end.

The result: the biggest laugh of the speech, and at Kobe protests from the table.

  4. Who Jess is1:21

Now, on the way out of the restaurant, it's a long night and we're very, very tired. And the restaurant was very busy. We lined up for ages to get to the counter. And there's about 20 people behind us. And then Jess starts commenting to the girl behind the counter serving. She's saying, you know, oh, your nails are just lovely. Like, did you get them done today? Are you going out? And then she's commenting, your hair is absolutely gorgeous. And Jeremy and I are just looking at each other, rolling our eyes, saying, seriously, Jess, like, do you have to do this now? Right? So we're just waiting, waiting, waiting for this conversation to happen. And then I pay. And as we walk out, I say, Jess, why did you need to do this? Why did you need to do this interaction right now? And she says to me, can't you tell this girl was so upset? She's obviously having a bad day. And it only took me one minute. And she's smiling, right? She's happy. She said, that's all it takes. So that Kobe, Kobe is who you just married, right? She would consider everyone.

Why it works: A short story about his daughter: in a long queue, she stops to cheer up the girl behind the counter. He doesn't call her kind. Her own line, “that's all it takes”, says it for him. Then he turns to Kobe: that's who you just married.

  5. To Kobe0:47

I see how you treat my daughter. It's beautiful. You treat her with respect. You always look after her. You ask her, would you like to try my food? Are you OK? You open doors for her. You allow her to walk through first. That sort of respect is hard to find in a person. It comes from good parenting. I know that. It's very, very rare. I hope one day Jess can afford a jumper so that she's not constantly wearing yours.

Why it works: He tells the groom what he's seen him do for Jess: offer her his food, open doors, let her go first. Examples make the praise easy to believe. A joke about her always wearing his jumper brings the laughs back.

The result: the couple laughs, and Jess calls back “I got my own tonight.”

  6. Advice and the toast0:45

I think you both are a match made in heaven. And I don't think you'll ever part. My advice to you, live with honour and integrity. Be open and honest. Communicate. Respect each other. Be patient with each other. And you'll live a very, very happy life. I love you both. And I know I'll love you forever and you'll be together forever.

Why it works: Five pieces of advice, one short line each, then “I love you both.” He ends on the two of them.

The result: the applause starts right on “together forever”.

How to start, and how to finish

The two hardest sentences to write are the first and the last. Take one of these, or let it show you the shape.

Openers

None of them “for those who don’t know me”.

  • “Emma called at 9:40 on a Tuesday night. I knew before she said a word.”

  • “Last spring, Daniel asked me to lunch. He ordered a club sandwich and never touched it.”

  • “When Emma was six, she told us she'd never get married, because she couldn't leave the dog.”

Closers

How to land the toast.

  • “9:40 on a Tuesday. Best phone call I've ever gotten. Please raise your glasses to Emma and Daniel.”

  • “Daniel, I said yes before the check came. Welcome to the family. To Emma and Daniel.”

  • “Emma, you found someone who loves the dog as much as you do. Glasses up, to Emma and Daniel.”

Questions

Good questions, quick answers

How long should a father of the bride speech be?

Two to three minutes, about 300 to 450 words out loud, and never more than five. If you're also welcoming everyone as the host, the welcome and the thank-yous have to fit inside that, so give them about a minute and the story the rest. Time yourself standing up, because everyone talks faster in front of a room than at the kitchen table.

Does the father of the bride have to give a speech?

It's a tradition, not a rule. It comes from the bride's parents hosting the reception, which is why the welcome often falls to him. Today whoever is hosting can give it: her mother, both parents together, or the couple. If you'd rather not speak, tell your daughter early so someone else can plan to.

When does the father of the bride give his speech?

If he's welcoming everyone as the host, at the start of the reception, usually just before dinner is served. If he's giving a toast instead, it often comes after the best man and the maid of honor, and some fathers speak right before the father-daughter dance. The couple or the planner sets the order, so ask on the day.

Who should the father of the bride thank?

Keep it short: the guests, especially anyone who traveled, the groom's parents for raising him and for welcoming your family, and your wife or the bride's mother. Three to five names at most, and check with the couple so nobody gets thanked twice. Don't mention what anything cost.

What should I say to the groom?

Turn and talk to him directly for thirty seconds or so. Name one specific thing you've seen him do for your daughter, and leave it there without explaining what it proves. "We're glad you're here" lands better than a formal welcome into the family.

How do I mention her mother if she has passed away?

Ask your daughter a few weeks ahead how she'd like her mom included. Some brides want her named out loud; others would rather have something quieter, like an empty seat or a photo on a table. If you do mention her, keep it to a few sentences built on one real detail, so it stays a toast and doesn't turn into a eulogy. Have a backup line ready in case your voice goes.
